Dickens Era

Did you know that Charles Dickens is hugely influential on how we celebrate Christmas today? The Dickens’s Christmas stories—A Christmas Carol being the most famous—forever shaped Christmas as a season of giving, kindness, and charity.

Our May Lemax Christmas Village inspiration photo harkens back to the mid 19th century, featuring items from the Lemax Caddington Collection. In these simpler times, we see villagers gathering around the local town square, which can provide ample inspiration for your Christmas village.

This village features five popular local businesses. At the far left, we have LaRosa’s Cucina, a charming Italian restaurant. Next we have Willow Square Gift Merchant, a great place to pick up holiday trinkets. Chestnut King is the go-to spot for snacks on cold winter days, and Penelope’s Puddings & Custards is full of sweet treats. Finally, we have Three French Hens, a classique French restaurant.

Between these lighted buildings, we see a thriving and exciting town of active villagers—the sign of any great village. The Bread Bakers are hard at work making fresh loaves of bread from their brick oven, there are tons of sweet and salty treats being made at the Kettle Corn Stand, and a pair of gentlemen are lighting street lamps at the Lamplighter Countdown.

You’ll have to take a close look at this inspiration photo for plenty of fun moments. There are almost too many to list. Carolers are singing at the Street Lamp Serenade. A Nanny is pushing a baby carriage. An eager child is pulling at her grandfather’s sleeve in Let’s Go Grandpa. Love is clearly in the air with the Dickens Couple and the Bike Ride Date.

We believe strongly in accents and accessories to make a village truly come to life. In this Dickens-era photo, there’s a Victorian Wishing Well, a White Hawthorn Tree, and a variety of other tree collectibles setting the scene!

We hope you enjoyed this month’s inspiration post. Check out the Lemax Caddington Village Collection for more Dickensian fun!
